Legislative Priorities

  1. Healthcare: Advocate for legislation like the New York Health Act to permanently solve our healthcare crisis, ensuring all members, even those who move out of state after retirement, have access to high-quality healthcare, not a cut-rate Medicare plan.

  2. End Mayoral Control: Work with community and parent allies to replace mayoral control and ensure decision-making is more inclusive of all stakeholders.

  3. Restorative Justice Programs: Push for NYCPS investment in expanding effective, bottom-up restorative justice and conflict resolution programs.

  4. Fully Funded, Fully Staffed Schools:  Advocate for increases to federal, state, and local funding mechanisms to ensure schools are fully and equitably funded and fully staffed.

  5. Fix Tier Six: Jointly lobby for supportive state legislation to achieve pension benefits for Tier V and Tier VI members equal to or exceeding Tier IV benefits.

  6. Class Size Laws: Collaborate with communities to close loopholes in the class size law and align our contract’s class caps with the new law.

  7. Taylor Law Reform: Support current legislative efforts to amend the Taylor Law to be more union friendly.

  8. Protect Retiree Benefits:  Lobby for laws to protect retiree healthcare and pensions, preventing privatization into Medicare Advantage plans.

  9. Fair Tenure Process: Ensure probationary periods for teachers match those of other municipal unions (two years or fewer).

  10. End Paying for Certification Renewal Courses:  Eliminate expensive and burdensome certification renewals (CTLE credits).

  11. No More Tenure Binders: End excessive paperwork like tenure portfolios and extensions, which aren’t required for other municipal employees.

  12. Fight Privatization: Oppose the privatization of public education. Prevent the outsourcing of educational and other public school services to private interests.

  13. End Corporate Testing: Work to eliminate high-stakes, for-profit, corporate testing.
