A Democratic UFT
Open Contract Bargaining: Adopt transparent and open bargaining practices for all UFT contracts. No more closed door, backroom deals!
Empower Members: Train and educate chapter members on their rights, responsibilities, and develop their skills to organize against abusive working conditions.
Create an Organizing Division: Build strong, active chapters that can take action at the school level and prepare members to be strike-ready for the next contract negotiations. Enlist retirees to go into schools and support chapters. Send union staff into school to help, assist, and empower chapters to deal with routine compliance issues (i.e., teacher programs, class size, space for faculty.)
Contract Access: Ensure every member gets a printed copy of our contractual agreements.
Healthcare Changes: Make sure no major healthcare changes happen without a membership vote.
MOA Approval: Any changes to our contract through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) must be approved by a membership vote.
Increase Voting Participation: Expand opportunities for member involvement, including electronic voting.
Proportional Representation: Adopt proportional representation in future union elections so that all of our voices are heard in UFT decision making.
District Representative: Hold elections to vote for district representatives.
Divisional Vice Presidents: Let all school divisions elect their union vice presidents. Elementary teachers should choose their VP, and high school teachers should choose theirs.
End Patronage Hiring: End the current leadership’s practice of hiring loyalists, regardless of competency, and replace it with a member-run hiring committee. Present union-wide job postings and inform staff’s right to form their own union.
Member Engagement Before Political Endorsements: Ensure full membership and DA involvement before endorsing or funding political candidates. This includes a requirement for candidates to support our legislative agenda.
